New Norwich City chief Johannes Hoff Thorup knows his task is to break the club's Premier League boom and bust cycle - but warns it will take time.

Thorup signed a three year deal last week to replace David Wagner, and his mission is to get the Canaries back to the top flight and then keep them there.

City’s previous two attempts ended in swift relegations, but the 35-year-old is up for the challenge.

“The goal is the Premier League,” he said, speaking to Danish outlet Bold. “I probably won't get criticism if we don't move up next season, but we have talked about building a sustainable project. They are annoyed that they are relegated from the Premier League immediately every time, because the foundation has not been strong enough.

“We have talked about the Premier League being the ambition after season two, so that we can build something strong, and we can get the academy integrated better, while also being supplemented with players from outside.

“We must create a style of play, a culture and an environment that is so strong that the team can manage in the Premier League. Therefore, I also have the feeling that there is quite a lot of patience, and that it is a process that needs to be carried out.”

Thorup feels it is crucial to bring the Yellow Army on the journey.

“I'm excited, I hope that they are excited as well. I hope that we can create something together, it's so important that they are proud of the team,” he said, in his recent first club interview. “It's also so important that they feel that it’s also young players from here, and that they support with everything that they can. The stadium is a fantastic place so a lot of excitement ahead of us.

“First of all, that it's a ‘we’ project and it's not me coming in and deciding everything from the beginning. I have to make sure that I am very clear that this is something that we do together, and everyone has to have that feeling.

"We have to build on a team that can dominate games and that's what we are going to start with from day one. That's going to be very exciting, I will say.”
