Norwich City’s new on-loan Manchester City signing Callum Doyle is a pass master for Johannes Hoff Thorup
Doyle could be in line for a swift debut in Saturday’s Championship opener at Oxford, following his protracted summer switch to Norfolk on a season-long loan.
Panamanian international Jose Cordoba is struggling to be fit after muscular issues in the final two friendlies.
But Thorup has no fears about throwing the 20-year-old left sided defender Doyle into the fray after only completing his move on Tuesday.
“What is also good for him, and us, is that he had minutes in pre-season with Man City. So it's not like we have a player who we have to get him back into shape again,” said the Dane. “No, he's more or less ready.
"He started playing on a high level, very young, so he's used to it, and that's exactly what we need, both because of the profile as a player and also as a profile of experience in the top level here in England.
“An important player for us, but like the others we have to be careful. Of course we have to respect that he just joined us a couple of days ago, and find that balance between where we start him, when we play him, and how many minutes we can give him from the beginning. But he's a player ready for Saturday.”
Doyle’s calmness in possession is the stand out feature for Thorup.
“His passing qualities are at a very, very high level, and what he's used to is exactly what we need,” said the Dane. “So a player that we targeted, it feels like a couple of months ago, actually, and had some good talks with him, some good conversations.
"We also made a clear plan for him and made it clear to him he is a player that we really, really like. So then it was for us to be patient.
“Of course we wanted him to be as quick as possible. But it was only this Monday and that's fair enough. That's how it is. We are comfortable that he's used to what we will ask him to do here.
"There will always be some small differences, but he's used to it. And we can also see that, from day one, he's very comfortable on the ball.”
Doyle’s arrival is perfectly timed, with Cordoba being eased into Thorup’s early plans.
“He’s a question mark (for Saturday). We’ll try. He's recovering well, and I think he's actually okay,” said the City boss. “It's a matter of us finding the best patterns, in terms of the week that we step into now with a game on Saturday, Tuesday and Saturday - and what will be best for him.
"He will see some game time, whether we want to be Saturday is not a decision that we have taken yet. He has done some (team training) but for us we have to be a little bit cautious.
“We spoke before he doesn't have that much of a holiday, so it's more or less just for him stepping from the Bulgarian season into the Copa America, and then directly more or less here. So we also have to respect that, and also be a little bit careful about that.”
